Kissinger, China, and World Domination

Will China take over the world? And if so, how soon? This was the subject of the Munk debate, a biannual public-policy forum sponsored by the Aurea Foundation, held in Toronto last Friday. The speakers were Henry Kissinger, Fareed Zakaria, Niall Ferguson, and David Daokui Li, and the audience was asked to vote, before and after, on the resolution that "the twenty-first century will belong to China." Pre-debate results showed a near even split, with thirty-nine per cent for the motion (argued by Ferguson and Li), forty against it (Kissinger and Zakaria), and the rest undecided.

It's interesting—in the "kind of weird" sense of the term—that an academic debate hosted by the University of Toronto garners the attention that it does. Nonetheless, the Munk Debates have somehow managed to make a splash on the international scene (which is exactly the sort of splash Toronto cares about). Whether the subject is the environment or atheism, the foreign press corps takes note, and the next debate should be no different, as Henry Kissinger and Fareed Zakaria square off against Niall Ferguson and David Daokui Li over whether the 21st century will belong to China.

Munk Debates to feature Kissinger on China

It's been nearly four decades since Henry Kissinger first visited China, enticing the country to open its socialist economy to Western capitalism and helping to begin its meteoric rise. But the former U.S. secretary of state argues that, for all its growing economic and political clout, China will not dominate this century, as many have predicted.

The Aurea Foundation announced today the resolution and presenters for the seventh semiannual Munk Debate, to be held in Toronto on Friday June 17th.
To encourage public debate of the geopolitical issue of our time, the seventh semi-annual Munk Debate will table the motion: be it resolved, the 21st century will belong to China.
